'Biohazard'라는 일본 게임이 원작인 시리즈 영화로, 게임이 원작인 영화로서는 상업적으로 가장 성공한 영화 중 하나이다. 게임이나 영화의 제목이 일본을 제외한 해외판 모든 시리즈가 'Resident Evil'인 이유는 북미 쪽에 같은 이름의 뮤지션이 있기 때문이라고 한다. 게임의 설정을 가져온 부분도 있지만, 영화만의 오리지널 노선을 가지고 있기도 한데 대표적으로 'Milla Jovovich'분이 연기한 'Alice'라는 인물이 있다.

좀비 영화로 서막을 알리면서 공포 분위기를 잘 살렸던 1편 이후로 시리즈를 거듭할수록 액션의 비중이 커지고, 스토리가 점점 산으로 가면서 대중들의 평가가 낮아졌는데 흥행 성적은 반대로 갈수록 더 좋은 성과를 거뒀다. 마지막 6편에서는 잠시였지만 한국 배우인 '이준기'분이 출연하여 임팩트 있는 연기를 보여주기도 한 'Resident Evil' 시리즈는 화려한 액션과 더불어 볼거리가 풍성하여 킬링타임용으로는 나름 괜찮은 영화였다.
