Episode #01. Valar Dohaeris

"You're telling me you saw one of them? And why would that make you desert your brothers?"

"그들 중 하나를 봤다는 건가? 형제들을 버린 것과 그게 무슨 상관이지?"

"Because when I told the Lord Commander, he already knew. Thousands of years ago, the First Men battled the White Walkers and defeated them. I want to fight for the side that fights for the living. Did I come to the right place?"

"사령관에게 말했더니 이미 알고 있었습니다. 수천 년 전, 최초인들은 백귀와 싸워 물리쳤습니다. 산 자들을 위해 싸우는 편에서 싸우고 싶습니다. 제가 제대로 찾아온 게 맞습니까?"

"We'll need to find you a new cloak."

"새 망토를 구해 줘야겠군."

Episode #02. Dark Wings, Dark Words

"I'd condemned this poor, innocent child to a horrible death. All because I was jealous of his mother. A woman he didn't even know. So I prayed to all seven gods, let the boy live. Let him live and I'll love him. I'll be a mother to him. I'll beg my husband to give him a true name, to call him Stark and be done with it, to make him one of us."

"애가 무슨 죄가 있다고 죽으라고 저주를 하다니. 그 애의 엄마를 질투한다는 이유로, 애는 엄마도 모르는데. 그래서 일곱 신께 기도를 드렸지, 애를 살려 달라고. 살려만 주시면 애를 사랑하고 어미가 돼 주겠다고. 남편에게 이름을 물려주라 간청하고 Stark라 부르며, 가족이 되겠노라고."

"And he lived?"

"그래서 살았나요?"

"And he lived. And I couldn't keep my promise. And everything that's happened since then.. all this horror that's come to my family.. it's all because I couldn't love a motherless child."

"살았지. 그런데 난 약속을 지킬 수 없었단다. 그날 이후로 일어난 일들은.. 내 가족이 당한 이 끔찍한 일들은.. 내가 그 딱한 아이에게 사랑을 못 줬기 때문이야."

Episode #03. Walk of Punishment

"Khaleesi, a dragon is worth more than any army. Aegon Targaryen proved that."

"Khaleesi, 용들이 군대보다 낫습니다. Aegon Targaryen이 증명했잖습니까."

"You're both here to advise me. I value your advice, but if you ever question me in front of strangers again, you'll be advising someone else. Is that understood?"

"그대의 조언은 새겨듣고 있지만, 다시 다른 이 앞에서 내 뜻을 의심하면 다른 주군을 찾아야 할 겁니다. 아시겠나요?"

"My father.."

"내 아버지가.."

"And if you get in any trouble, all you've got to do is say 'my father' and that's it, all your troubles are gone."

"무슨 일만 당하면 '내 아버지' 타령이군, 그걸로 문제가 모두 해결 될 테니까."

"Don't."

"하지 마."

"Have you got something to say? Careful. You don't want to say the wrong thing. You're nothing without your daddy, and your daddy ain't here. Never forget that. Here, this should help you remember."

"무슨 할 말 있나? 조심해. 말조심하는 게 좋을거야, 네가 믿는 아비는 여기 없으니까. 절대로 잊지 마라. 여기, 이걸 보면서 기억하거라."

Episode #04. And Now His Watch Is Ended

"That's what we are.. Ghosts. Waiting for you in the dark. You can't see us, but we see you. No matter whose cloak you wear.. Lannister, Stark, Baratheon.. you prey on the weak, the Brotherhood without Banners will hunt you down."

"우리가 바로 유령이지. 네놈들을 기다리는 존재. 네놈들은 우릴 못 봐도 우린 네놈들을 볼 수 있지. 네가 Lannister, Stark, Baratheon.. 어떤 망토를 걸치든 상관없다. 약자들을 괴롭히면 깃발 없는 형제단이 네놈들을 쫓을 것이다."

"You have been slaves all your life. Today I give you free. Any man who wishes to leave may leave, and no one will harm him. I give you my word. Will you fight for me? As free men?"

"너희들은 평생 노예였으나 오늘부터 완전한 자유다. 떠나고 싶으면 가도 좋다, 아무도 해하지 않겠다. 내 약속한다. 날 위해 싸우겠느냐? 자유인으로서?"

Episode #05. Kissed by Fire

"These men are brothers. They're a family. I've never had a family."

"이 사람들은 형제고 가족이야. 난 가족도 없었잖아."

"I can be your family."

"내가 가족이 되어 줄게."

"You wouldn't be my family. You'd be 'my lady'."

"넌 내 가족이 될 수 없어. 넌 귀족 아가씨니까."

"If your precious Renly commanded you to kill your own father and stand by while thousands of men, women, and children burned alive, would you have done it? Would you have kept your oath then? First, I.. killed the pyromancer. And then.. when the king turned to flee, I drove my sword into his back. 'Burn them all.' he kept saying. I don't think he expected to die. He.. He meant to.. burn with the rest of us and rise again, reborn as a dragon to turn his enemies to ash. I slit his throat to make sure that didn't happen. That's where Ned Stark found me."

"네가 그렇게도 아끼던 Renly가 아버지의 머리를 베고 노인 아이 할 것 없이 수천 명을 태워 죽이라면 그렇게 하겠나? 그때도 서약을 지킬 수 있을까? 먼저, 난.. 화염술사를 죽여 버리고.. 도망치는 왕을 쫓아 등에 검을 꽂았지. 그런데도 지껄이더군. '다 태워 버려라.' 자기가 죽을 거라곤 생각 안 한 모양이야. 그는.. 그놈 생각엔.. 우릴 모두 태우고 용으로 부활해서 적들을 잿더미로 만들 줄 알았겠지. 난 혹시 몰라서 목까지 그어 버렸어. 그때 Ned Stark가 내 모습을 본 거야."

"If this is true.. why didn't you tell anyone? Why didn't you tell Lord Stark?"

"그게 사실이라면.. 왜 진작 말 안 했지? 왜 Stark 경에게 얘기 안 한거지?"

"Stark? You think the honorable.. Ned Stark wanted to hear my side? He judged me guilty the moment he set eyes on me."

"Stark? Ned Stark가 내 얘길 듣기나 할까? 날 보는 순간 이미 죄인이라 판단하더군."

Episode #06. The Climb

"I did what I did for the good of the realm."

"난 왕국을 위해 그랬을 뿐입니다."

"The realm? Do you know what the realm is? It's the thousand blades of Aegon's enemies. A story we agree to tell each other over and over till we forget that it's a lie. But what do we have left once we abandon the lie?"

"왕국? 왕국이 뭔지 압니까? Aegon이 적에게 뺏은 검 천 자루 같은 겁니다. 거짓말이란 게 잊혀질 때까지 서로 떠들기로 한 이야기 같은 것. 그 거짓말을 버리면 뭐가 남을까요?"

"Chaos. A gaping pit waiting to swallow us all."

"혼돈이 남겠죠. 모두 그 구덩이에 빨려 들어갈 겁니다."

"Chaos.. isn't a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail. and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some.. are given a chance to climb, but they refuse. They cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is."

"혼돈이란 건.. 구덩이가 아니라 위로 오를 사다리입니다. 올라가다 실패하고 포기하는 자들이 많죠. 패배감에 젖어서 그리고 어떤 이들은.. 기회가 있어도 거절합니다. 왕국에 매달리거나 신이나 사랑에 매달리죠. 모두 허상입니다. 사다리만이 현실이며 올라가는 것만이 유일한 길이지요."

Episode #07. The Bear and the Maiden Fair

"We're taking her to King's Landing. Unless you kill me."

"우리가 King's Landing으로 데려간다. 싫으면 날 죽여라."

"She belongs to me. Lord Bolton's orders."

"저 계집은 내 거야. Bolton 경의 명령이다."

"What do you think is more important to Lord Bolton? Getting his pet rat a reward or ensuring Tywin Lannister gets his son back alive?"

"Bolton 경에게 뭐가 더 중요할까? 작은 쥐새끼 한 마리일까? 아니면 Tywin Lannister에게 아들을 돌려보내는 걸까?"

Episode #08. Second Sons

"My lord father has commanded me to consummate this marriage.. Stop. I can't. I could, I won't."

"내 아버님께서 이 혼인을 완성하라 명하셨소.. 그만. 못 하겠소. 할 수는 있지만, 안 할 거요."

"But your father.."

"하지만 아버님께서.."

"If my father wants someone to get fucked, I know where he can start. I won't share your bed. Not until you want me to."

"아버님이 누가 따먹히는 걸 원하신다면, 다른 곳을 추천해 드리지. 당신과 동침하지 않겠소. 당신이 원하지 않는 이상은."

"What if I never want you to?"

"제가 평생 원치 않는다면요?"

"And so my watch begins."

"그렇게 내 감시는 시작되노라."(Night's Watch의 서약 中)

Episode #09. The Rains of Castamere

"And why would I let him do that?"

"내가 왜 저놈을 보내 줘야 하지?"

"On my honor as a Tully, on my honor as a Stark, let him go or I will cut your wife's throat."

"Tully의 이름을 걸고, Stark의 이름을 걸고, 아들을 풀어 주지 않으면 당신 부인의 목을 긋겠소."

"I'll find another."

"또 구하면 되지."

"Mother.."

"어머니.."

Episode #10. Mhysa

"When the king was visiting the Nightfort, the cook killed the king's son, cooked him into a big pie with onions, carrots, mushrooms and bacon. That night he served the pie to the king. He liked the taste of his son so much, he asked for a second slice. The gods turned the cook into a giant white rat who could only eat his own young. He's been roaming the Nightfort ever since, devouring his own babies. But no matter what he does, he's always hungry."

"왕이 Nightfort를 방문했을 때, 왕의 아들을 죽이고 채소와 같이 다져서 큰 파이로 만들었어. 그날 밤 그 파이를 왕에게 대접했지. 왕은 아들인지도 모르고 정말 맛있게 먹었어. 신들은 그 요리사를 거대한 쥐로 만들고 자기 새끼들만 먹도록 만들어버렸지. 그 후로 Nightfort를 배회하며 자기 새끼들을 먹지만 아무리 먹어도 허기가 가시지 않는대."

"If the gods turned every killer into a giant white rat.."

"신들이 살인자들을 전부 쥐로 만들었다면.."

"It wasn't for murder the gods cursed the Rat Cook or for serving the king's son in a pie. He killed a guest beneath his roof. That's something the gods can't forgive."

"쥐로 만들었던 건 살인 때문도 아니고, 왕의 아들을 파이로 만들어서도 아니야. 자신의 집을 찾아온 손님을 죽여서였어. 신들은 그 죄만은 용서하지 않아."

"Valar morghulis."

"Valar morghulis."

"You do not owe me your freedom. I cannot give it to you. Your freedom is not mine to give. It belongs to you and you alone. If you want it back, you must take it for yourselves. Each and every one of you!"

"너희들은 내게 자유를 빚지지 않았다. 내가 자유를 줄 수도 없다. 너희들의 자유는 내 것이 아니다. 오로지 너희들의 것이다. 되찾고 싶다면 직접 되찾아야 한다. 너희들 자신이!"

이 표현이 적절할지는 모르겠다만 간만에 기나긴 여정이었다. 오랜만에 찾아본 'Game of Thrones'이기도 했고 지난 시즌의 기억과 등장인물들의 정보를 조금이라도 더 떠올려보려고 찾아봤기 때문에 그랬을 수도 있다. 이번 시즌에서도 많은 명장면이 있었지만, 개인적으로 가장 기억에 남는 장면은 'Red Wedding'에서 Stark 家의 어머니 'Catelyn'의 모든 것을 잃어버린 듯한 마지막 모습이었다.

시즌 4에서는 또 어떤 내용이 다루어질지 어떤 반전이 기다리고 있을지 어떤 재미를 안겨줄지 벌써부터 기대가 되는 드라마임에는 분명한 것 같다.
