Episode #01. Heaven's Half Hour

"I was told you tried to kill Benjamin Poindexter that night. It's hard. It's hard to come to terms with a violent nature. Hating the power that it has over us."

"그날 밤 Benjamin Poindexter를 죽이려 했다더군. 쉽지 않지, 인간의 폭력성을 받아들이기란 말이야. 우리를 지배하는 그 힘을 거부하지."

"I was raised to believe in grace. That we can be touched by the divine and transformed into a better person. So if you say to me that you're a new man, I say, "Fine". But you should know, I was also raised to believe in retribution. So if you step out of line, I will be there."

"난 자비를 믿으며 자랐어. 하느님의 은총을 받으면 회개할 수 있다고. 너도 새롭게 태어났다고 했지? 그렇다고 쳐. 하지만 난 응징의 필요성도 배우며 자랐거든. 그러니 명심해, 선을 넘으면.. 내가 찾아갈 거야."

Episode #02. Optics

"You're not a mayor who loves his city. You're a whiny kid who wants everyone to love him, a monster trying to rewrite his legacy. Well, guess what? It's too late. Once a thug, always a thug. See you around, Kingpin."

"넌 이 도시를 사랑하는 시장이 아니야. 관심을 원하는 애새끼이자, 과거를 다시 쓰려는 괴물일 뿐이지. 그런데 어쩌나? 너무 늦었는데. 한 번 깡패는 영원히 깡패거든. 또 보자고, Kingpin."

Episode #03. The Hollow Of His Hand

"Every night, Hector Ayala goes out and risks his life to keep his neighborhood safe, to protect his community. So ask yourselves, does this sound like the type of man who'd murder a police officer in cold blood? He is a man of integrity. The community says so. The police say so. The mask doesn't make the man. And whether Hector Ayala's wearing a White Tiger suit or not, he's a hero."

These vigilantes are a threat to any society that's based on the rule of law. A man who wears a mask to cover his face.. is a coward. These vigilantes, they are not heroes. And I ran on a promise, and the acquittal of Hector Ayala demands that I keep it. The rule of law must prevail."

"법원이나 배심원도 실수를 하죠. 내가 잘 압니다. 그 결과 복면을 쓰고 사적 제재를 가하는 살인자는 풀려나서 뉴욕 거리를 활보하고 순직한 베테랑 경찰의 한은 풀리지 않았죠. 그 자칭 자경단들은 법치주의 사회에 대한 명백한 위협입니다. 복면으로 얼굴을 가리는 자는 겁쟁이에 불과합니다. 이들은 영웅이 아닙니다. Hector Ayala의 무죄 판결은 내가 내걸었던 공약이 왜 중요한지 잘 보여 주죠. 법치주의는 반드시 승리해야 합니다."

Episode #04. Sic Semper Systema

"Forgiveness isn't just the highest act of love, it is the only way forward."

"용서는 단순히 숭고한 사랑의 표현이 아니에요. 유일한 해결책이죠."

"Foggy.. He was the.. kindest, purest soul I ever met. And guys like you and me, we can work a lifetime and never measure up to his decency. Goodbye, Frank."

"Foggy는.. 내가 아는 사람 중 가장 순수했어. 너나 나 같은 인간은 평생을 노력해도 Foggy 발끝에도 못 미치지. 잘 있어, Frank."

"I was told forgiveness is the highest form of love. I wonder.. would you agree with that, Adam?"

"누군가 그러더군, 용서는 숭고한 사랑의 표현이라고. 어떤가? 당신도 동의하나, Adam?"

Episode #05. With Interest

"Mr. Khan, if I may? Have you ever needed a defense attorney?"

"Khan 씨, 하나만 여쭤보죠. 피고인으로 법정에 선 적 있나요?"

"Me? No. No, thankfully, not."

"아뇨, 다행히 없습니다."

"Well, if you ever do, it's often David versus Goliath. The cops, the prosecution, public opinion, the entire system conspiring against you. We represent husbands, sons, daughters, people like you and me, Mr. Khan. So yeah, we may be over-leveraged, for now, but we serve a vital function in a city that desperately needs us."

"그런 재판은 David과 Goliath의 싸움입니다. 경찰과 검찰, 여론 사법 체계가 그 사람을 조여 오기 시작하죠. 누군가의 남편이자 아들딸들, Khan 씨나 저 같은 사람들요. 비록 지금은 재정 상황이 어렵지만 시민들에게 없어선 안 될 역할을 맡고 있습니다."

"Your compassion and willingness to take risks are the very qualities that make you an excellent defense attorney, Mr. Murdock, but, unfortunately, they're the same reasons that you do not meet New York Mutual's criteria for approval."

"위험을 감수해서라도 사람들을 돕겠다는 그 마음은 훌륭한 변호사에게 필요한 자질이겠지만 바로 그런 면 때문에 저희 은행 입장에서는 대출을 승인해 드리기 조심스럽습니다."

"사탕 하나 먹어도 되죠?"

"You must."

"얼마든지요."

Episode #06. Excessive Force

"I can imagine that Vanessa would like for me to let you go. But that's a difficult thing for me to do. You understand that, right? How we are.. locked together. Our experience.. shared."

"아마 Vanessa라면 널 풀어 주길 바라겠지. 하지만 그럴 수 없어. 너도 이해하겠지. 그 사람으로 인해 우리는 이미 엮여 버렸으니까."

"Thou did establish Saint Ives as a judge in the midst of his brethren, making him a friend and advocate of the poor. Do thou make us, by his intercession, steadfast in the pursuit of justice and confident in that merciful goodness."

"주께서는 성인 Ivo를 재판관으로 세우시어 빈자들의 벗이자 대변자가 되게 하셨나이다. Ivo의 기도로 저희가 정의를 굳게 좇으며 자비로운 선하심을 믿게 하소서."

Episode #07. Art for Art's Sake

"When I brought you over.. from your previous life, can you recall why I said I hired you?"

"자네의 예전 삶을 버리고 내 밑에서 일하라고 할 때 내가 무슨 말을 했는지 기억하나?"

"I believe you called it my ability to think.. asymmetrically."

"저의 틀을 깨는 사고를 높이 산다고 하셨죠."

"Thank you, Buck. Could you call Vanessa and ask her if she'd like me to bring her home some sole meunière?"

"고맙네, Buck. Vanessa한테 전화해서 솔 므니에르를 포장해 갈지 물어봐."

Episode #08. Isle of Joy

"You know, we.. we put Poindexter away and it changes nothing, all right? We defend Hector Ayala and he's still murdered, probably by the same cops who are out there assaulting citizens, by the way, all right? Leroy Bradford goes away for eating a box of caramel corn. Heather's assaulted by Muse and she thinks Fisk is right. And now this asshole, this privileged sociopath can get away with ripping off teachers. We're not serving justice here, you know? We're babysitting chaos. This, us, what.. what we do, it feels useless."

"Poindexter를 잡아넣어도 바뀌는 건 없어요. Hector Ayala는 무죄를 받았지만 살해됐고요. 지금 시민들을 폭행하는 그 경찰들 짓이겠죠. Leroy Bradford는 팝콘을 훔친 죄로 감옥에 갔고, Muse한테 당한 Heather는 Fisk에게 동조하죠. 그리고 저 부자 사이코패스 자식은 교사들을 등쳐 먹고 억울한 척하고요. 이건 정의가 아니에요. 오히려 혼돈을 부추기고 있죠. 지금 우리가 하는 일은 무의미하다고요."

"사람이 비밀을 너무 오래 간직하다 보면 병이 들기 마련이죠."

Episode #09. Straight to Hell

"Murdock saving you does complicate the optics of things, somewhat."

"Murdock이 시장님을 지킨 모양새가 돼서 곤란해졌습니다."

"No. Quite the opposite. Imagine if our fearless lawyer from Hell's Kitchen.. were to succumb to his wounds. Wounds he's sustained by trying to save the mayor. In this case, a dead hero is better than a live vigilante."

"아니, 오히려 반대야. 생각해 보게, Hell's Kitchen의 용감한 변호사가 몸을 던져 시장을 구했지만 본인은 총상에서 회복하지 못했다. 죽은 영웅이 살아 있는 자경단보다는 나으니까."

"My mistake was thinking I was immune to the darkness. And I let it creep inside me. I let the dark power me. I threw Poindexter off that rooftop. Karen, I wanted to kill him. The truth is, ever since Foggy died.. I didn't know who I was anymore."

"나는 어둠에 물들지 않을 줄 알고 어둠을 받아들였어요. 그 힘을 이용했죠. 난 Poindexter를 옥상에서 밀었어요. 놈을 죽이고 싶었다고요. 사실 Foggy가 죽은 이후로.. 나도 내가 누군지 모르겠어요."

"Foggy believed in you. Whatever you wanna call yourself. Whatever's.. Behind the mask, behind your eyes.. that's wrath, and that's mercy. That's the dark and the light. He knew all of it. All of it. He knew you. I do, too."

"Foggy는 당신을 믿었어요. 스스로 뭐라고 생각하든 상관없어요. 그 가면 뒤 당신의 머릿속에는 분노와 자비가 공존하죠. 빛과 어둠요, Foggy도 알고 있었어요. 정말이에요.. 나도 마찬가지예요."

영화 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', 드라마 'She-Hulk: Attorney at Law', 'Echo'에 조금씩 등장한 바 있었던 'Daredevil'.. 시각 장애인이지만 그 대신 다른 감각이 특출하다는 면에 매력이 크게 느껴져, 오래전부터 기다려 왔던 드라마였다.(조금 늦게 접한 기분도 들지만..)

하지만 진입 장벽 또한 존재했는데.. Netflix에서 시즌 3까지 제작했던 'Marvel's Daredevil'이 'MCU'의 정사로 편입되면서, 이 드라마가 후속작의 개념이 되었기에 '시즌 4'라고 봐도 무방하다는 것이다. 그래서 나처럼 'Daredevil: Born Again'으로 'Daredevil'을 본격적으로 접한 이들에게는 드라마 중간중간 물음표가 찍히는 부분이 있다.(물론, 이전 드라마들을 안 봐도 재미는 충분히 있지만, 아무래도 미리 챙겨본다면 재미가 배로 느껴지지 않을까 싶다..)

여태껏 많이 보아온 화려하고 파워가 넘치는 다른 히어로들과는 다르게 자경단으로써, 처절하고 현실적이면서 또 잔인한 면도 보여주는 'Daredevil'이 나에겐 어딘가 있을법하게 느껴져서 그런지.. 매력이 더 크게 다가온 것으로 보인다. 나중에는 Netflix의 드라마도 조금씩 챙겨보면서.. 방영을 앞두고 있는 'Daredevil: Born Again' 시즌 2도 기대를 품고 기다려보아야겠다.
